Cremè De Menthe Hot Chocolate

minthotchocolate

Remember when you were a kid and Christmas vacation lasted forever?  It was probably, what, two weeks?  But it was forever!  And it was wonderful!  And when summer vacation came around you felt like you were out of that building for YEARS.  And it felt like it because everyone came back two inches taller in the fall.  😃  But at some point someone hit the Princess Bride time accelerator button and now every single day zips by.  Two minutes ago we were opening Christmas presents.  Now it’s almost St. Patrick’s day.  Um, what?  😉  So I think I need something cozy and relaxing to drink while I ponder time…possibly with a skull in my hand like Hamlet.  There’s an interesting mental image, huh?

Hot chocolate: now here’s something that makes everyone feel warm and cozy.  I mean, who doesn’t love hot chocolate?  When I was a kid I was ALL about the Swiss Miss.  And those cute little marshmallows!  Weren’t those the best part?

Then I discovered coffee shop hot chocolate, which was obviously off the charts in terms of better.  At that point I still didn’t drink coffee, but because of my need for a chocolate fix I still never said no to a coffee house.  And now I love coffee.

My favorite kinds of hot chocolate are the ones that are jazzed up.  I like spicy hot chocolate.  And white hot chocolate?  Um, yes please.  But today, in honor of St. Patrick’s day just around the corner I thought it was time to pull out the cremè de menthe.  🎉😉. Yippee!

mint hot chocolate

True confession time: I don’t bake much with spearmint or peppermint. I always go for the boozy cremè de menthe alternative.  I just love the punch of mint it gives.  Every time I make peppermint bark at Christmas I use this stuff instead.  Heaven!  And I’ve seen both green and clear versions so you don’t have to be worried about staining your bark a weird color.

So I thought it was time to unleash my favorite liquor from the cabinet and make some hot chocolate. (If your making this for kids I do believe there’s a non-alcoholic version).

Now, this stuff is STRONG.   Good, but strong. So you can’t put too much in this hot chocolate or instead of having delicious minty hot chocolate you’ll have something that tastes like chocolate mouthwash…hey…did I just come up with a new product?!  Call the patent people, quick!  😉

How much do you want to bet that chocolate mouthwash exists?  Yikes!

This hot chocolate is so good.  It might become your new winter tradition.  And will get you in a green state of mind.  And of course if you happen to be the proud owner of some incredibly vibrant green marshmallows, why not add a couple?

Thanks, Gayle! Although as soon as I made this as a warm-me-up drink it suddenly got unseasonably warm. 😀 Isn’t that always the way? 😉

Thanks, lady! Oh my gosh I’ve made this a bunch of times with white chocolate too and I’m not even sure which one I like more. And sometimes I make a white chocolate mocha with a shot of this. Yum.

I love minty hot chocolate! But toothpaste hot chocolate is the WORST, I’ve so done that! Haha. You are right, the older you get the faster time flies!! It’s scary!

I’ve done that too. You think “just a little more mint wouldn’t hurt”. Nope. Whoops. 😄

It’s 80 degrees here in sunny DC, but I’ll have hot chocolate any time of year! I also don’t bake with mint much, but a nice chocolate-mint treat from time to time is always a good idea!
