“Cat trap” game

It came from the internet!  Again!

Hello all.  It’s that time again, time to see if I can amuse the cats with random DIY games and toys found quickly and assembled in such a way as to show that I am not at all crafty.

I’ve been itching to try this “game” for a couple of months now.  It’s based on a pretty simple principle: cats can’t resist a good box, and if they see something that reminds them of one, they’ll hop on in.  Who wouldn’t?  I remember a time when a fridge was delivered and as soon as I saw that box I was five again.  I may have sat down inside of it.  I guess you’ll never know.

This idea for a tape cat trap came from Buzzfeed.  Basically Buzzfeed asked people to put pieces of tape on the ground in the shape of a box, and see how long it would take their cats to wander in and sit down.  Could owners “catch” their cats in these fake cat traps?  Would the cats be able to avoid the lure of something that reminded them of a box?  In the end, cats everywhere couldn’t help but wander into the tape outlines and lounge.  So I wondered how Pie and the boys would fare?  And would they like their fake box?

Here’s what you need to make this “trap”:

-Tape (Any kind except the clear stuff because, it’s, well, clear.  If you don’t want to put tape on your floor, be creative.  Put some belts, ties, or anything else long and thin onto your floor in the shape of a box to see if you can get ’em.)

-A scissors.  To, you know, cut the tape.

And wow, here are some easy instructions: Cut the tape and place it onto your floor in the shape of a square.  Then watch to see if your cat takes the bait.

So what did Pie and the boys think of it?  Well, by golly, I think we have another winner.  Wow!  Two weeks in a row.  Pie meowed like it was Christmas as soon as I took the tape out, actually.  Not sure what that was about.  However, she ran around the box too quickly for me to take a picture.  Gus and Oliver, however, wandered right in.  I got them!  They both loved sitting inside the tape square.  They even took a toy inside it with them.  After a couple hours, though, chaos began to reign and they started trying to pull it up.  I should have seen that coming.  I wonder if anyone else had that problem.  Yes…I think the answer is probably yes.

Success!  This is a pretty silly game, but the cats seem intrigued, and frankly, so was I.  Perhaps I’m easily entertained.  Or maybe I really am turning into a crazy cat lady.  Or probably both…probably both, who are we kidding?

Have a great weekend, friends!
